In a series of raids in the backdrop of the general elections,the rural police and the local crime branch arrested five persons and seized six firearms,two cartridges and sharp weapons.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday morning,Ravindra Kadam,Superintendent of Police,said that Additional Superitendent of Police Ashok Morale,police inspector Satish Patil and police inspector Bhau Indalkar of the rural police laid traps at Kivle,Dhayari,Chikali and Saswad on Monday and arrested the suspects.
The police nabbed Prakash Bhangilal Chaudhari (22) from Dhayari and seized two fire arms and two live cartridges. While interrogating him,the police came to know that the duo smuggles arms from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar into the state and sells them here for a neat profit. The police seized two fire arms from Mahesh Jaiswal (50) of Azamgadh in Uttar Pradesh and Shekhar Giri (55) from Baliya in Uttar Pradesh. They were nabbed near Kivale bridge on Mumbai Pune Expressway on Monday night. Deepak Walunjkar (30) was nabbed at Purandar taluka and Gorakh Sonawane (25) Sonawane at Saswad.
The police recovered one firearm and a cartridge from each of them. During interrogations,the police also recovered two swords from them,which they had kept at their residence.
Kadam said that though the firearms seized were country -ade,they were of very high quality and were smuggled from Madhya Pradesh,Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
