Workshop on National Green Tribunal tomorrow

An orientation workshop on National Green Tribunal (NGT) will be held at Indian Institute of Education in Kothrud on Sunday between 10am and 4pm. Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment (LIFE),Manthan,South Asia Network on Dams,Rivers and People (SANDRP) and Kalpavriksh have organised the workshop that will give an introduction on NGT and special cases related to environment. Advocate Ritwick Dutta who has been contesting cases in the NGT will address the gathering. The NGT is Indias first dedicated environmental court set up in 2010 by the Parliament. Circuit benches of NGT are set up in Pune,Bhopal,Kolkata and Chennai earlier this year and the Pune bench had jurisdiction in Maharashtra,Gujarat,Goa,Daman and Diu.

Man gets 5-yr ri

Additional Sessions judge S Z Qazi recently convicted Pravin Krushna Bhurte (24) of Kothrud for abetting his wife Pratidnyas (22) suicide in 2008.

The court sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,500. Pratidnya had committed suicide by consuming poison on May 19,2008. Pravin was an alcoholic and was harassing her,police said. Her mother had registered a complaint.

Mohta elected chairman of BCMG

Advocates Motisingh Ghanshyamdas Mohta from Akola and Karan Dilip Bhosale from Mumbai were elected as chairman and vice-chairman of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa (BCMG). The duo will be in office for one year. Advocate Harshad Nimbalkar,member of BCMG from Pune said the the new office bearers will follow-up the demand of increasing the amount payable to the heirs of lawyers with more than 30 years of practice,from Rs 30,000 to Rs 10 lakh among others.
