“I work in my own way. Citizens and politicians have the right to criticise,” outgoing city police chief Meeran Borwankar said on Wednesday, commenting on a remark by a political leader after the civic polls.

A day after the announcement of her transfer to the Prisons department,Borwankar, talking to Newsline was referring to a remark by a senior NCP leader that the cops had failed to handle post-poll violence in the city.

Talking about her tenure in the city, she said,“The entire tenure of almost two years is very fresh. It will be very difficult to talk in detail. But I can say I am very satisfied with my tenure as police commissioner. I must tell you that the team of police officers I worked with was my dream team. It had some of the best officers from the state.”

Underlining actions taken by the Pune police under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act,Borwankar said,“I had come here from my posting at the joint commissioner crime and had experience in MCOCA and MPDA cases. We have done our best in neutralizing eight gangs invoking MCOCA and five invoking MPDA.” She said,“I am very satisfied with activities like study circles at the police station level where experts from various fields guided police personnel, and the students’ internship programme. We got amazing response from institutions and experts.”

Stressing the need of strengthening the constabulary,Borwankar said,“In almost all the cases where a citizen has to interact with police,a constable communicates with citizens. They are the real heroes. At the same time,I really feel there should be no difference in the way they treat VIPs and common citizens. The physical and mental health of constables is an area of concern considering their duty hours and the stress they undergo.”

‘People Want Singhams’

Answering a question on leadership,Borwankar said,“I personally believe the days of charismatic leadership are over. People want Singham-like figures, but we actually need leaders who will strengthen the establishment, she said referring to Singham,a movie in which a cop was depicted as an one-man army bringing culprits to book.
