In the 25th year since the start of her creative journey, artist Madhuri Bhaduri reflects on her inspirations and her relentless pursuit of art
My paintings are reflective of what one is thinking and not just what one is seeing. Artist Madhuri Bhaduri’s repertoire too is a reflection of the phases of inspiration that she crossed in her 25 years of painting so far flora and fauna in the ’80s; figures and nudes in the ’90s; and abstract elements since 2000. Her exhibition, titled ‘Reveries’,will be on display at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai from June 9-15. My paintings were first exhibited at Jehangir Art Gallery in 1988. This will be my 25th solo show, says Bhaduri.
The present exhibition will feature,in her own words, landscapes, seascapes and rooftops. The thick catalogue of her recent works divides her paintings on these lines, and are off-set by intermittent white and black backgrounds. The colourful oil on canvas works have a distinct ambient quality about them and seem like the extension of one continuous thought rather than different points of view. I have channelised varied inspirations into the paintings,it’s not about looking at a place, but a mix of what all I saw and felt in many places. Like, the landscapes are symbolic of looking at fields from a distance, explains Bhaduri. Her creative process is an introspective one, involving playing around for hours at length with her favourite medium – oil paints. Everything I paint is symbolic of the people I meet or the forms I encounter. It’s a representation of the language I derive from them.
Bhaduri’s canvasses are swathes of colour, with lines and figures often crowding one corner or the center of the frame. One understands her inspiration when she says that art, eventually,is a search for her. It’s always about creating the next painting, searching for something else. It’s a relentless process, she says. After a graduation in Economics from Pune,Bhaduri completed a masters in Arts and Painting from SNDT,Mumbai. She also has a diploma in French from Alliance de Francaise. With no mentor to guide her creative path, she made the people closest to her the source of her ideas and perspective. An artist is expected to create something new, otherwise it’s replication. Why would people look at something if it’s not new,if it doesn’t touch their hearts?
