Closet Encounter

Rarely is a conversation about Bollywood item numbers complete without mentioning her name.

As curator for a fashion clothing portal,Malaika Arora Khan aims to reach out to the woman next door

Rarely is a conversation about Bollywood item numbers complete without mentioning her name. Then again, with each successive song,Malaika Arora Khan has pushed her glamour quotient a few notches higher. Even on the fashion front, she has achieved the status of a style icon. It is to cash in on this identity that Label Corp first approached her to curate for their second celebrity-led shopping portal. After their success with the Home Label led by Sussanne Roshan, the company ventured into leisure wear with Khan at the helm.

Khan notes how the process of setting up theclosetlabel.com began almost a year ago. “Fashion is something I strongly feel about. In fact, fashion and food have always been on my to-do list. So when the Label Corp suggested this to me last year,I was keen to come on board,” she says. And though Khan is known for her oomph factor driven by her evening wear, this website is instead focused on offering shoppers a collection of everyday fashionable outfits, personally handpicked by Khan — as the brand’s creative director and tastemaker.

“I will style complete looks for women so that they can be effortlessly chic every single day. Besides, the label also offers sportswear, swimwear, essentials and our version of the iconic wrap dress that will change each season,” she says, adding that when the site was launched on May 14,a total of 70 pieces were put up online.

Given that the label is targeted at women of all age-groups,the price range is quite affordable. “It varies from as low as Rs 250 for a necklace to a dress priced at Rs 1,200,” says Khan, who has also zeroed in on a selection of accessories for the website — right from chunky jewellery (chokers and bracelets) to bags, scarves and flip flops.

Moreover,in order to make Closet Label more interactive, the site will also carry Khan’s “pick of the week” with tips on how to go about putting together a complete look.

“This is my way of reaching out to my fans and offering them style solutions. Also, the idea was to get people to relate to the clothing being offered on the site. The variety is in tandem with my own style mantra, which is centred on fashion that has a great fit and is thus wearable, apart from being value for money,” says Khan.
