Children’s Day Out
KEM Hospital’s Big Ears Clinic organised a special day for hearing impaired children at Choki Dhani recently. It was part of pre-Children’s Day celebrations. Over 90 children who have been operated with cochlear implants attended the function. It was organised by Aarambh,a social group at KEM. The event was marked with various activities like a drawing competitions,camel rides,kachi godi,puppet show,tango,magic show,giant wheel,bullock cart ride and folk dance. Aarambh ensured that the day was a memorable one for the children. Dr Neelam Vaid,implanting surgeon and head of Big Ears at KEM Hospital,Pune,said,This was the best gift that we could have given our children on this occasion. They all had a great day full of surprises and fun,which brought a smile on their faces and this is what matters to us at KEM. The participants were all from different schools and age groups who got together for the celebrations.
Menace of Female Foeticide
A symposium on female foeticide was organised by the DSK Foundation at the S M Joshi Hall on November 4. Writer Veena Dev,Dr Shakira Inamdar,head of the National Survey Scheme,Pune University,actors Pradeep and Madhura Velankar and entrepreneur Meenal Mohadikar participated in the debate. The symposium traced the menace of female foeticide in the urban areas and aimed at motivating the youngsters of the city on this subject. With the growing gender discrimination among urban couples,Maharashtra can ‘boast’ of six lakh female infanticides every year, said Inamdar. The speakers stressed on the dignity of women’s lives and the need to extend full support to create a proper future for them.
