The Grant Medical Foundation’s Ruby Hall Clinic,Pune, has organised a Cardiology summit and a workshop on May 10 at Aamby Valley City in Lonavala.

According to course director Dr Shirish (MS) Hiremath, interventional cardiologist at Ruby Hall Clinic, the objective of the summit is to share the experiences and challenges faced by cardiologist while performing coronary intervention procedures such as angioplasty and others.

Dr Hiremath highlighted WHO findings that India would become the world diabetic capital by 2010,which means there may be a substantial increase in coronary artery disease. He said ever since coronary intervention started in 1977,there has been a satisfactory technological development in the hardware being used.

According to Hiremath, this forum will create a platform where operators get an opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills by sharing experiences and expertise in handling newer generation challenges.

This forum will discuss the latest trends and technological break through in drug eluting stents, challenging coronary intervention cases and live demonstration of cases which will be telecasted through satellite link between Ruby Hall Clinic’s cath-lab to a select group of cardiologist assembled at the Aamby Valley City.

During the workshop Dr Hiremath and Dr Pravin Chandra,Director Cardiology of Max Devki Devi Hospital in Delhi, will demonstrate live the use of latest generation coronary drug eluting stents. The stent system,BioMatrix, comprises of a “Biodegradable polymer coating” and the latest drug “Biolimus A9”.

Dr Hiremath commented that the new technology will help reduce long term adverse effects of earlier generation stents as was demonstrated in various clinical studies conducted the world over and published in medical journals.

He said that in this stent system, the drug BA9 will help faster healing of arteries and after six months there will be no drug and the polymer in the patient’s body would degrade and get excreted out of the body.

This may prevent long-term adverse effects like late loss (narrowing of arteries) and others. He also said that the company,Biosensors International,is continuing with its post marketing studies in diabetic and general Indian patient population.
