No matter how hard bollywood strives to draw the attention of those who enjoy listening to a particular genre, people still prefer to groove to the music of trance and techno. However,it does reach out to a certain mass of people who enjoy dancing to the beats, but it’s not enough. Most of the discotheques in Pune prefer to play ‘old skool’ music.

“Retro and Classic rock is what people give an ear to and they have been doing it for ages,” opines Khodu Irani, owner of High Spirits. Although Bollywood breathes non-stop in our lives, mediums like radio and television make it trite, making us immune to their tunes. We go to a disc expecting something different and new. Music like House and trance accomplishes the above and is prominently played in most of the places in Pune.

“Electronic and Progressive House has made its way in through Bollywood tracks,” says DJ Raksy,of Stone Water Grill. Reiterating on the matter,he comments,“Bollywood has not caught up that well,as Punietes just devour House music here.”

Bollywood may have been predominant a few years back, when Puneites were not aware of other genres. People used to groove to the beats of a Hindi film song,be it Chaiyaa Chaiyaa or the super-hit Kajrare. But thanks to non-stop 24X7 FM playing in our lives,Hindi songs have been shown the door in discotheques.

DJ Deep of Gaia comments,“Three years ago,the only music heard was hip-hop and Bollywood, but since then, there has been a sea change. Nowadays,Psychedelic,Minimal and Electronic Trance is most prevalent. It is also important to educate the audience about different types of genre. Songs with absence of lyrics are catching on.” Deep says,“Music depends on what you are and where you are,it does not take place in a vaccum.”

The partygoers are feeling the change too and have observed the transit in their own tastes and preferences. “I don’t remember when was the last time I heard a Bollywood track being played at a disc,” says Vishal Gupta, who has been a regular partygoer for the last 20 years.

When everyone is talking about trance and house,DJ Santosh, who spins at Leather Lounge,Envogue and Zaha’s has a different story to tell. He says,“Wednesdays are known as Lady’s Night Mix,where female DJs are at the console, playing Iranian and Persian Tracks, catering to the music needs of many.”

Pune being a cosmopolitan city,it has thousands of foreigners visiting the city every year. Most party-goers say Hindi music bores them to death and there’s no way they can shake their booty to these tracks.

It’s safe to say that Pune discs are on a ‘Yo-Roll’ keeping in mind the varied audience from all over the world, and adapting to their unique needs.
