Jewellery designer Farah Khan’s design,a bejwelled crown, finds a place in Beyonce’s new album for her ‘Goddess’ look
A routine work e-mail a few days ago from Swarovski, turned out to be a pleasant surprise for jewellery designer Farah Khan. Having designed for the Austrian brand in the past,Khan got to hear how the ‘Goddess’ crown designed by her for their opulent ‘Runway Rocks’ show held in London in 2008,had been chosen by R&B singer Beyonce Knowles to wear in her new album 4. So as the singer will stomp and high-kick in her new dance video wearing the crown,Khan can feel proud.
Khan didn’t really need to download the photo of the crown to recognise her creation — an ornate crown designed using over 3,000 pieces of smoky topaz, orange citrine, pearls and more. “It’s a very earthy piece that has bursts of gold,” reminisces Khan, whose inspiration for the crown was an Indian goddess. “Since it was a runway show,I wanted to make it grand with an Indian touch apart from celebrating the beauty and grace of a woman,” says Khan.
Interestingly, the crown made its way into the Swarovski archives, and was recently pulled out after Beyonce made her selection. It’s a great feeling to know that my creation impressed her. She’s a style icon herself and personally,I couldn’t be happier to see someone like her wear my design, says Khan, who made the official announcement along with Beyonce’s photograph sporting the crown on her twitter page.
Though the jewellery designer is happy to find the spotlight on her again,it’s not the first time celebrities have sported her creations. Serena Williams is said to have fallen in love with one of her rings. “I have sent my jewellery to the Oscars as well. The international recognition is a result of 17 years of hard work. I am very passionate about what I do and would like my work to speak for me,” says Khan.
Back home,Khan’s latest muse is surprisingly the Indian tiger. My last collection was about animals and I am now taking that forward with a ‘Save the Tiger’ charity show, says the designer, who is also in talks with the Ministry of Environment for a show that will be held soon. The range of jewellery will be themed on the tiger and it’s taken me a while for getting the right facial expressions in my pieces, says Khan. The funds generated from the show will go to NGOs working to save our national animal.
