Former state-level cricket player Shyam Naidu has taken to a different pitch. These days he earns his living by painting, sketching and doing portraits
He played and excelled in the state-level cricket tournament held in 1983. After giving 10 years to the game,he bid goodbye to cricket in 1993. Though he had a penchant for painting, drawing and sketching, due to his bad financial condition he took up a job in the automobile industry, where he worked for over 12 years. But like it happens with most creative people,he couldnt stop himself from following his heart and then everything else took a backseat. Thats 43-year-old Shyam Naidu, who now devotes his complete time to his first love painting.
Initially I used to make paintings and sell them to various art galleries in the city. But when I realised that they are buying from me at a very low rate and are selling at high prices,I stopped selling my paintings to them, says Naidu, who later on took to wall-painting making artistic designs on the walls of residential houses and offices. The trend of getting one of the walls painted,he says has picked up in the last few years. Though he also does landscapes and figuratives for the walls as per the demands of his customers,he prefers painting abstract art in acrylic.
Having struggled and experienced lack of money from close quarters,he has a soft corner for poor yet creative people. So,everytime he travels in the outskirts of the city for getting new ideas for his landscape,he stops in-between when he comes across road-side paintings and artifacts sellers. I educate them on colour-combination and latest trends in drawing that are in-demand. I cannot help them financially but can share my talent with them, says Naidu.
Talking about differences between a painting on canvas and that on a wall,he says,One can carry a canvas painting anywhere with him but wall-painting is a static piece of art. While a 36 sq ft painting on wall will cost you around Rs 8000,same size of canvas creation will cost about Rs 40,000.
Speaking about the reason as to why the city has just a handful of wall-artists,he says,Established and renowned artists would not like the idea of going door-to-door for doing a piece of art.
Though Naidu is quite happy with giving soul to his passion, there are still a few wishes that he would like to fulfill in future. He says,My financial condition is not permitting me as of now; but in future I would like to hold a solo exhibition of my paintings. And one subject that I havent explored till now will have prominence in that exhibition.
The unexplored subject that Naidu is talking about is of a mother and a child. The theme encompasses so many emotions together, he concludes.
