The Armed Forces Medical College got its own dermatology department on Friday. Academic programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students will be conducted in the new department built at an approximate cost of Rs 50 lakh. It will also have an OPD and special clinics for vitiligo and psoriasis. The department was inaugurated by Lt General D P Vats,Director and Commandant,Armed Forces Medical College. Earlier the dermatology department was functioning from Command hospital. Maj General Manoj Luthra,Dean and Deputy Commandant,inspected the facilities. A new department was considered a necessity in consonance with Medical Council of India regulations,Professor and Head of Dermatology Department at AFMC,Col Rajan S Grewal,said. The facility will provide narrowband ultraviolet B and A photo therapy,carbon dioxide laser surgery,dermabrasion and microdermabrasion,vitiligo surgery,hair transplantation,electrosurgery and radiosurgery,cryotherapy,chemical peels,nail and mole surgery,scar revision,iontophoresis in addition to contact allergy patch testing and cosmetology consultation. It will also house the first dermatology intensive care unit in the country for patients with dermatologic emergencies and acute skin failure.
