City-based band Brahma-Putra talk about amalgamating Western and Indian genres of music to create original work

Fusing the multiple genres of blues, rock, jazz,Indian classical and even Bollywood,city-based band Brahma-Putra,has made it their mainstay to create original music from it. Comprising of students and fresh graduates, the band which was formed in 2008,will be performing in the city on September 8 at the Inorbit Mall. Siddharth Pathak ,lead guitarist,is the founding member of the band. He was instrumental in handpicking the rest of the crew to complete the formation.

Along with Pathak the band consists of Ajiton Esteibeiro, keyboardist and Denzil Menezes, bass guitarist are from Goa,Pratik Malusare, percussionist,Ganesh Venkateshwaran, drummer and Annend Patil, who is the vocalist. “Pratik and I have worked together before the band was formed. When we came up with the idea of forming the band,we were the first ones to get together, then we roped in Anand, who is a close friend. We came across Ganesh who has been a part of the music circuit of the city for the last five years and roped him in as well,” says Pathak, adding,“I came across Denzil at a rock competition that I was judging, and asked him to join our band. He then brought in Ajiton.”

Each band member is inclined towards a different genre of music. While Menezes is influenced by western country music,Esteilbeiro is inclined to western classical music. Venkateshwaran is highly inspired by veteran drummer Darshan Doshi. Malusare and Pathak are responsible for the Indian classical touch to their songs. “The thing I like most about the band I am a part of is that we are not restricted to any one genre or any particular style. There is so much diversity among us that we really enjoy creating something different with our compositions. Everyone is a contributor when it comes to ideas, music, performance and everything,” says Esteibeiro.

The band will be performing some of their hit originals like Anjaane hai yeh raste, which is song of a wanderer who has set off on a journey to an unknown destination, blindly trusting his destiny to get him where he needs to be. Another favourite is Chal raha hoon main,a song that depicts the woes of a young boy who wants to pursue music as his career but does not get an approval from his family members as they want him to get a lucrative job and join the corporate rat-race. “Our songs are mostly in Hindi, and inspired by personal experiences. One may say that our songs are episodes of our lives that are put in tune,” says Pathak.

“We are working on our latest track which is untitled as of now. It is a song about the experiences we have as a band on the stage. The bright lights, the unpredictable crowd that sometimes cheers on and encores and sometimes boos, the thrill of being on the stage and the chills you get down your spine when you are the centre of attention, performance pressure and more,” he describes.
