Old memories play hide-and-seek as Nostalgia Brand Chewing Gum returns to stage
Sometimes, plays have a way of forcing themselves back to life. At least thats what Vivek Madan would like to believe. When he was looking for ways to end his long break from theatre as well as take a sabbatical from his corporate career, directing Nostalgia Brand Chewing Gum seemed to be the best option. With Q Theatre Productions (QTP) offering to back it,the Bangalore-based theatre artiste moved to Mumbai a month ago to kick-start the rehearsals.
True to its name, the play that premiered on Friday evening as part of QTPs Comedy Fest, triggers nostalgia in Madan. As a collage student,he became familiar with the play when he bagged a role in it. Later on,he directed it for the Thespo festival and even won an award. After that, the play took a backseat in his life as he tried to balance a day job in event management and sporadic theatre assignments. Nearly a decade later, when I wanted to return to theatre, both my producer Quasar Thakore Padamsee and I felt that this play still retains its appeal, he recalls.
The play is about Adil,Natasha,Bob and Kara sometime friends or lovers or colleagues or roommates. On one evening, flooded with memories, they revisit their relationships. It takes a look at relationships and the different dynamics at play in them. I hope the viewers will leave the auditorium not just laughing, but with some thoughts, after watching it, the director says.
Even though the play is making a comeback after over a decade,Madan feels that it hasnt lost its relevance in the context of urban dalliances. Most adult audiences will be able to relate to the characters in the play and the situations they are in, he says. Still,he chose to adapt the play by American playwright Eric Gordon keeping the Indian sensibilities and situations in mind. It features Tariq Vasudeva,Diksha Basu,Karan Pandit and Kallirroi Tziafetta in the cast. After its inaugural run at Prithvi Theatre,Juhu,on Friday and Saturday, the play travels to the just-opened Jagriti Auditorium in Bangalore from March 11-13.
