The much-awaited winter winds have finally arrived in Mumbai, and according to the India Metrological Department (IMD),the cool and dry weather is expected to continue for a few days.
The cold northerly currents blowing into the state has brought down the minimum temperatures to 1 degree below the seasons normal. Temperatures have fallen in the northern parts of India. And since Mumbai is seeing an influx of north-westerly to northerly winds, the minimum temperature has fallen appreciably here too, said an official from India Meteorological Department,Mumbai. The official added that fluctuations will continue every time the northern parts come under the influence of western disturbances or if a low pressure develops in the Southern regions.
Incidentally,a trough of low pressure which developed on the sea level off Kerala-Karnataka coast during the weekend,is predicted to bring rains and thundershowers in a few places on the south Konkan-Goa and regions of south Maharashtra like Satara, Sangli, Sholapur and Kolhapur stretch. On Monday the trough lay over Lakshadweep.
While the weekend saw the minimum temperature in Santacruz plunge to 14.8°C the mercury rose slightly on Monday with Colaba and Santacruz recording 19.3 and 15.6°C minimum temperatures and 28.4 and 28.8 maximum temperatures respectively. The relative humidity rose slightly to 52 and 48 percent in the two regions respectively. The IMD officials said,The slight rise in temperature in Mumbai is owing to a small western disturbance passing across Northern India. These systems carry moisture with them and a cold current behind them. Thats also why they bring cloudiness and rains with them sometimes and chill weather follows.
However,Dr R V Sharma, deputy director general of IMD Mumbai, said,While slight fluctuation will be present, the cool weather is likely to continue for the next few days. Temperatures are bound to remain a few degrees below normal.
