Three raids,11 arrests by special squad

Around 6 pm on Saturday,police arrested seven persons for illegally betting on horse races. On a tip-off,police raided Real Western Indian Trophy Club at Sainath Patel shopping centre in Malad west. The special squad recovered Rs 41,000 in cash and handed over the seven suspects to the Malad police station for further investigations.

Four hours later,special squad officers arrested Abdul Deewan from Kurla for allegedly mixing oil and kerosene for sale in the black market. Sharma said Deewan and two of his absconding accomplices used to mix the fuels in a godown near Kalina Service Road area for the past six years. The police recovered 100 drums of adulterated fuel from the godown worth around Rs 15 lakh. The special squad handed over Deewan to the Kurla police for further investigations.

The squad conducted another raid three hours later at RA Kidwai Marg and arrested two drivers and a cleaner of an oil company for allegedly stealing oil from the tanker and transporting it for sale in the black market.

The police have recovered oil worth around Rs 20 lakh from the trio.

Sharma said the three had modified the company tanker to fool the authorities about the measure of oil in the vehicle.

During the raid,the officers found that a cavity in the tanker using which the trio stored excess oil. The fuel was later pilfered without making a difference to the measurement of the oil content in the vehicle.
