Three held for extortion

The Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested three persons on charges of demanding Rs 50 lakh from a jeweller.

The Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested three persons on charges of demanding Rs 50 lakh from a jeweller. The accused — identified as Dattaram Amerkar (47),Sachin Deokar (34) and Harishchandra Anpat (45) — were arrested on Wednesday after a trap was laid at Crawford Market.

Police said the jeweller was constantly getting extortion calls from the accused for the past few days. “The accused had demanded Rs 50 lakh as protection money and warned the jeweller of dire consequences if he did not pay,” said an officer.

The accused even reportedly threatened to harm the jeweller’s family and his business partner. “Harrowed by the constant demands,the jeweller registered a case. After investigations,a trap was laid on Wednesday to nab the three accused,” said the officer.

The police are yet to nab another person who they claim was hired to carry out the hit. The absconder resides in Dagdi Chawl where gangster turned politician Arun Gawli hails from.

“The accused were produced in the court,which remanded them in police custody until December 13. Further investigations are on,” said the officer.
