Clarifying that he never confronted the judiciary, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar Wednesday said that considering the Constitutional provisions, the court would not set a timeframe on deciding disqualification of Shiv Sena MLAs.
Narvekar’s remarks came in the context of Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Prabhu moving the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Maharashtra Speaker to expeditiously decide on the disqualification pleas pending against rebel Sena MLAs led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
While interacting with The Indian Express, Narvekar clarified that he never confronted the judiciary, as reported in the news reports dated July 11 and his views have not been appropriately reflected in the media reports. He clarified that he is conscious of the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court which he shall follow while arriving at a decision.
He shall follow the procedure in accordance with the rules and arrive at a decision after giving a fair opportunity to all concerned. He, therefore, said that he is of the view, the court may not set a time frame for arriving at a decision.
The Speaker added that he shall take the decision without any undue delay.
Narvekar further said that when no notice has been issued to the Speaker, the question of his saying that the notice would not be accepted as reported in the media did not arise.
