“The accused and the girl belong to the same community. Around a year ago, the family of the accused approached her family for marriage. However, as the girl was a minor, the family agreed to marry her off to him only after she turned 18,” a police officer said. (Representational photo) A 22-year-old man ended his life by hanging himself after allegedly killing a 17-year-old girl in Palghar, the police said. The minor girl was killed on Friday and the suicide was reported early on Saturday, the police added.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Prabhakar Krushna Waghare (22), who was a resident of Tulyathapada in Mokhada, Palghar.
The police said that Waghare was a Class 7 dropout and had been working as a labourer in the outskirts of Mumbai.
The deceased girl was identified as Archana Laxman Udar. She was studying in Class 12 and stayed in an ashramshala (residential hostel) at Mokhada as her parents lived in a village in the interior areas of Palghar.
At around 12.30 pm on Friday, the police said Udar was going to her ashramshala with three female friends, when the accused allegedly stopped her under the pretext of talking to her.
Senior police inspector Dhananjay Jagdale of Mokhada police station said, “As he wanted to talk in private, the victim’s friends stepped aside. While the two were talking, Waghare allegedly removed a knife that he was carrying in his bag and attacked her. He stabbed her two times and escaped from the spot.”
The three girls raised an alarm after which locals gathered at the spot and subsequently police were informed. The girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead during treatment. The Mokhada police registered a case of murder against Waghare. “While we were looking for him, we came to know that he had ended his life by hanging himself with a rope. There is an iron rod near a dam in Mokhada, about 200 metres from his house. He allegedly tied the rope to the rod and hung himself,” added Jagdale.
A case of accidental death report was registered on Saturday morning.
An officer said, “The accused and the girl belonged to the same community. Around a year ago, the accused’s family had approached her family for marriage. However, as the girl was a minor, the family agreed to get her married to him only after she turned a major.”
Subsequently, there were some altercations between them due to which the girl’s family changed their stance. The accused came to know about it, the police said.
The police said that they would soon submit a summary report in court as the accused in the case is also dead.
