‘Noise levels soared past 100 dB in many areas’

On Wednesday,the last day of Ganeshotsav celebrations,noise levels crossed 100 decibels (dB) in nine areas and noise pollution norms were violated in two silence zones.

NGO Awaaz Foundation claimed the highest noise recorded was from Worli Naka,which stood at 123.2 dB after 10 pm,followed by Lamington Road at 121.8 dB.

As per noise pollution norms,noise levels cannot exceed 45 dB in silent zones,55 dB in residential areas and 75 dB in industrial areas after 10 pm. Noise levels recorded on Linking Road (Khar) and opposite Mithibai College(Ville Parle),both silence zones,crossed 85 dB. In other areas,noise from dhol-tasha instruments exceeded 100 dB after 10 pm,the NGO said.

It said Lalbaugcha Raja,Juhu Tara Road,SV Road(Vile Parle),Mahim,Matunga,Worli Naka,Opera House and Lamington Road areas recorded noise levels above 100 dB.

Awaaz Foundation convenor Sumaira Abdulali said,“Noise rules were broken in several areas . However,this year,there were fewer processions in the city as compared to last year in the city.
