After a slight increase in temperatures over the last few days, mercury levels dipped again on Sunday, with Santacruz recording a minimum temperature of 14°C while Colaba recorded 17.4°C. The Met department expects temperatures to fall further in the next two to three days.
After Thursdays 13.8 degrees in the suburbs and 18 degrees in the island city, the minimum temperature increased to 15.2 degrees in Santacruz and 19.6 degrees in Colaba the next day. However, temperatures again began decreasing, and on Sunday, settled at two degrees below Sanatcruzs normal of 16 degrees and more than two degrees below Colabas normal of 20 degrees. Daytime temperature at Colaba was same as its normal of 29 degrees and Santacruz recorded 29.2 degrees, below its normal of 31 degrees.
Weather officials have attributed this decrease in temperatures to a western disturbance in the north. There is a western disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir. Associated with this, the cold air from the area is being carried to the city by northerly winds and has thus resulted in a fall in minimum temperatures in the city, said Ajay Kumar, meteorologist,India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Explaining the recent phenomena of fluctuating temperatures in the city,Kumar said,When there is a western disturbance in the north, winds in the city are northerly and lead to a fall in minimum temperatures. When the disturbance moves away, the wind pattern changes from northerly to westerly or easterly. Then the air coming in from the Arabian sea which has moisture leads to increase in minimum temperatures.
Weathermen believe that minimum temperatures are likely to decrease further. There may be a fall of one or two degrees in the next two to three days, said Kumar.
