The couture week opens with drama and elegance
You know youre at a Manish Malhotra show, when drums beat belligerently, and a bare-chested young man comes and glares balefully at you from the ramp, followed by a bevy of bejewelled ladies in swirling lehengas and anarkalis. Of course,in deference to it being the HDIL India Couture Week,Malhotra showed not one but half a dozen bare-chested men; but the rest was familiar stuff. Billowing skirts, daringly cut cholis, enticingly transparent saris were all very pretty, but also very boring. Weve seen these deep jewel tones by the designer before, although we admit that nobody does it with more panache in bridal wear than him. Practice makes it perfect and Malhotra has been doing this for many seasons. Showstopper Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan,glowing in post-Robot success, got major love from hubby Abhishek and sporadic applause from the audience, who were a little taken aback by her uncharacteristically dark makeup.
After Malhotras high drama,Monisha Jaisings show, although beautifully choreographed by Mehr Rampal, felt a bit staid. Not that it stopped the designers diehard fans society ladies Avanti Birla,Natasha Poonawalla,Prerna Goel,Queenie Singh and Namrata Shroff from showing up for support. Jaisings theme From Goddesses to Vampires featured various interpretations of the LBD perhaps a few too many. Although the ones with strategically placed cutwork were very intriguing. The most eye-catching creation was the the blood red draped gown, which was unapologetically glamorous and sexy. We also liked the shorts paired with dinner jackets and cocktail dresses with embroidered bodices and feathered skirts risky, but the designer managed to pull them off in style.
