Mahayuti is committed to enforce Maratha reservation, ‘sage soyare’ draft notification : Ashok Chavan
In February, Chavan resigned from the Congress, ending his long association with the party. He joined the BJP and subsequently became Rajya Sabha (MP).

Former Chief minister Ashok Chavan on Thursday stoked the Maratha reservation plank at a poll rally held in his hometown, Nanded. Addressing the gathering at Nanded, Chavan said, ” I would like to reassure the gathering that Maha Yuti –- ( BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP) was committed to implementation of Maratha reservation in letter and spirit.
“The state government led by CM Eknath Shinde has already announced ten per cent reservation to Marathas.” Along with this, the issue of ” sage soyare” that entails issuance of kunbi certificates to eligible Marathas( whose ancestors had kunbi certificates) to avail reservation under OBC will also be taken to its logical conclusion. The draft notification had been issued,” he reassured.
In February, Chavan resigned from the Congress, ending his long association with the party. He joined the BJP and subsequently became Rajya Sabha (MP).
With Chavan on its side, the BJP expects to secure its seats in Marathwada region which saw massive unrest following the Maratha reservation issue.
It has been just three months since he joined the BJP, but is one of the star BJP campaigners aggressively impressing upon the people about Mahayuti’s unwavering commitment to Maratha reservation.
Nanded which has a sizeable dalit and Muslim population saw Chavan clarifying doubts about the Indian Constitution.
“The INDIA block is spreading false propaganda that if voted to power, BJP will change the Constitution. This is a ploy to divide votes and mislead people, ” he said.
“The Supreme Court has already stated that the basic structure of the Indian Constitution cannot be changed.” The Modi government has repeatedly stated that there was no question of altering the Indian Constitution. It strictly adheres to the Constitution, he added.
Earlier, in February 2024 chief minister Eknath Shinde during a special session told the state legislative assembly, ” The state government has taken the decision to give ten per cent reservation to Marathas based on the state Backward Class Commission which established their backwardness socially and educationally.”
Referring to the January 27 draft notification, which the state government had issued promising kunbi certificates to eligible Marathas and expanding its scope to extend it to blood relations, Shinde had said, ” The draft notification on kunbi certificates was put in public domain to invite suggestions and objections till February 16.
We have received six lakh objections. After thorough scrutiny the entire process will have to be followed and then the government will take a final decision.”
The chief minister also emphasised that the draft notification issued on January 26 was in accordance with the laid rules which were already in existence.
Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil has, however, expressed disappointment over government’s failure to enforce the “sage soyare” draft notification.
