TWO men who allegedly killed a stray dog near Inlaks Hospital in Chembur, were arrested Sunday, while a third suspect is absconding. The two confessed they were irritated by the canines constant barking and killed it,police said.
Chembur police arrested Sunny Ram Lokhande,a garlic seller near Inlaks hospital market area and Shyam Soma Rafukiya,an employee of Inlaks Hospital.
On Saturday,a Chembur resident,Jaishankar Shetty, approached police claiming that three men killed a stray dog and attempted to murder his pet dog,Tiger, who was with the stray dog when the incident took place. Shetty said the CCTV at the entrance of Inlaks Hospital recorded the incident.
Police examined the CCTV footage and found that at 3 am,the accused approached the canine, tied its neck using a rope, dragged it and attacked it with knife and a stone.
The three were about to attack Tiger as well, but it managed to flee. According to Shetty,Tiger was traced six hours later from a nearby locality.
The three were booked under sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal),34 (common intention) of the IPC and section 11 of the Cruelty to Animals Act,1960. Both accused were presented before the court and were remanded in police custody for two days.
Police are now investigating whether the stray dog was killed because it was a deterrent to the trio.
During summer vacations, incidents of house-breaks increase and it is possible the accused had planned a house-break and the stray dogs barking would have alerted the locals, a police officer said.
