Twenty-year-old Pooja Upadhyaya is quite the star these days at her college,National Institute of Fashion Design,(NIFD) Mumbai. As she goes for her lectures in the mornings, some of her classmates smile at her while others gather around to chat. They all have one topic to discuss — Upadhyaya’s victory at the Indian round of Triumph Inspiration Award,a lingerie design contest . The petite girl will represent India at the finals in Shanghai in October this year. It was on May 2 that the final-year design student showcased a two-piece set in blunt maroon and coy purple that walked the ramp. “This is my first attempt at designing lingerie. We were told that the garment doesn’t necessarily have to be wearable,it’s more like a piece of art,” says Upadhyaya. The fifth edition of this award saw a glamourous jury — models Anupama Verma and Anchal Kumar, interior designer and columnist Nisha Jamvwal, designer Anna Singh and fashion photographer,Vikram Bawa. “The theme was the Chinese symbols of dragon and butterflies and I have interpreted them through the use of colour and fabric. For me it defines the story of ‘hard and soft’,that’s why I have used suede and chiffon, two contrasting fabrics. Also,I have used a dark colour like maroon with a soft purple,” explains Upadhyaya.
