Top seeds B R Nikshep of Karnataka and Iska Akshara of Andhra Pradesh scored convincing victories to move to the third round of the boys and girls singles events respectively of the 7th Ramesh Desai Memorial All India National Ranking Juniors Tennis Championship today. Nikshep had things very much under control as he defeated Christian Cummings of Maharashtra in straight sets – 6-1,6-1. Akshara also enjoyed an easy outing as she tamed Tamil Nadu’s A Shameema 6-0,6-3 at the Cricket Club of India courts in South Mumbai.

Girls under-16 (2nd round): Iska Akshara (AP) bt A Shameema (TN) 6-0,6-3; Priyanka Kalita (Asm) bt Shweta Sen (WB) 6-1,6-1; Jennifer Luikhama (Har) bt Kanishka N Chawla (Mah) 6-2,6-2; Vanishka Sawhney (Del) bt Simran Kejriwal (Mah) 7-5,1-6,6-0.

Mahadik to lead Mumbai

Dhananjay Mahadik will lead Mumbai in the senior mens team which will take part in Hockey India National Championships to be played in Pune from May 28. The selection committee also picked Alden D’Souza while Conroy Remedios has been named vice-captain for the championship.
