Four persons were detained by the Mumbai Customs’ Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) on Monday for allegedly smuggling digital phone memory cards worth Rs 52 lakh into the country, sources said.

The AIU officials intercepted Rajendra Singh,Balwinder Singh,Kuldeep Singh and Rajbir Singh after they crossed the green channel without declaring the goods.

Sources said the AIU had been tipped off about the detained passengers and its officials recovered the memory cards on them after a thorough search. The detained persons were traveling on Air India’s flight 315 and landed early Monday morning. “One of them was coming from Hong Kong and the other three joined him on the flight in Delhi. On the flight the four divided the consignment among them so as not to arouse any suspicion,” said Additional Commissioner (AIU) Baljeet Singh Nunwal.

AIU officials said the detained person could be just a part of a larger syndicate involved in smuggling of high-end gadgets as there is a huge demand for these products in the gray markets. On Sunday,a 30-year-old man,Hem Prakash, was caught trying to walk away with 7,183 memory cards tied to his feet. Prakash had arrived from Bangkok by Cathay Pacific flight CX-709.
