Flyover collapse an accident, not a tech error: MMRDA

A day after a cantilever of an under-construction Lalbaug flyover collapsed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said it was an accident and not a technical error. According to Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson for MMRDA,the investigation is on and prima facie it appears that the incident was an accident and not caused by any technical error.

On Monday, during the auto launching of cement-concrete segments, the rear trolley of the launching girder came to rest on the edge of the south bound lane of the flyover, its weight causing the cantilever portion of three segments to break. The broken pieces fell on three cars and a motorbike. One biker was also injured.

Kawathkar added that the contractor — Simplex Infrastructures Ltd—¿ would pay for the damages. “The contractor has the insurance under which the cost of damages can be recovered. And the contractor has assured that the grievances of the affected would be taken care of,” Kawathkar said. Of the three cars damaged, one was a brand new taxi.

Meanwhile Vikram Patil, senior police inspector,Bhoiwada police station, said that a case of negligence has been registered against Simplex Infrastructure including two senior engineers and a supervisor. No one has been arrested in the case as yet.

The Lalbaug flyover was demolished in May 2009 to give way for a new one from Parel to Byculla. The construction is due for completion in January.
