Maharashtra cyber police have registered an FIR against a person who allegedly edited the profile of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia and added content to it. The police have registered an FIR against the user Ratnahastin, who, as per the complaint, added ‘derogatory’ content to the profile.

Apart from this, cyber police have also written to Wikipedia in the past asking them to ensure that no derogatory edits are made to the profile as it could lead to law-and-order problems in the state.

An official said, “The user Ratnahastin has made some edits to the profile which are derogatory following which an FIR has been registered against the user. We are trying to find out the person’s identity.” The official added that notices had been sent to the California-based Wikipedia requesting the removal of the content on Sambhaji Maharaj. They said in spite of several emails, only an automatic reply was received but no action was taken.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also taken note of the content and asked the police to initiate action. The edits were flagged by various organisations after the release of the Bollywood movie ‘Chhaava’, starring Vicky Kaushal, which is based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj.
