An easterly wave in the southern peninsula has caused an acute incursion of moisture in Maharashtra, raising the mercury and relative humidity and bringing clouds over Mumbai,on Monday. As the maximum temperatures soared at 33.2°C and 32.8 and humidity rose to 91 and 72 per cent in Colaba and Santacruz respectively, the India Meteorological Department did not rule out the possibility of sporadic thundershowers in isolated places in the south Konkan-Goa and south Maharashtra stretch.
A trough of low pressure that developed on the sea level, off the Kerala-Karnataka coast still persists. This trough is causing cloudy weather across Maharashtra, K Satidevi, director IMD,said on Monday. On Monday, above normal temperatures were recorded in most parts of Maharashtra and Konkan regions. In Mumbai, the minimum temperatures rose considerably too, touching 20 degrees in Santacruz and 22.6 degrees in Colaba.
IMD officials stated that another reason for the warm weather was that while the North of India is experiencing a cold wave, the northerly winds are not arriving in Maharahstra, and instead the state is under the influence of the warm easterly system.
The low pressure is expected to move away in two days. Satidevi said,A dip in the temperature is expected once the trough moves away.
