Arif Syed Abu Bakr,driver-cum-bodyguard of Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar, had a narrow escape two days before he was gunned down outside Kaskar’s residence on Pakmodia Street in Nagpada last Tuesday.

During interrogation, the two shooters who allegedly killed Abu Bakr disclosed that they had attempted to eliminate him two days before the murder. Acting on instructions from their handler, the duo had gone to Pakmodia Street and waited for Abu Bakr. However, their attempt was foiled when he failed to show up.

Investigations had earlier revealed that three accomplices of the shooters, two of whom were identified as Umed alias Rehman and Raju, were also involved in the attack and were present in the area during the shooting.

The police have now learnt that there was a fourth accomplice involved in Nepal, who passed on instructions on behalf of Umed to Khatri months before the murder took place.

Meanwhile, the police have also gathered background information on the perpetrators of the attack. DCP (Zone 1) Cherring Dorje confirmed that the two shooters,Syed Bilal Mustafa Ali and Indra Bahdur Khatri, were associated with the Chhota Rajan gang.

The police said Umed, who has been involved in major incidents of gang land firings in the city, became one of the owners of Spice Up,a Chinese restaurant in Seawoods in Navi Mumbai in March this year. The police also suspect that the conspiracy behind the Pakmodia Street murder was hatched at the restaurant.

Officers from J J Marg police station said Umed, who handles Rajan’s gang in south Mumbai, had fled to Bangkok in the past, and it was possible he could have gone there now too.

“We searched the restaurant and his Nagpada residence, but Umed had already fled. We suspect he might have left the country,” said an officer from the J J Marg police station.

According to the police,Umed is an accused in the murder of Asif Dadi in Bhendi Bazaar on February 13 last year, and that of Zahid Ghulam Hassan Mir alias Chotey Miyan and his nephew Syed Arshad Hussain in Nagpada on July 29,2009.
