The alleged rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Odisha’s Bhadrak district has triggered protests by locals, even as the police arrested the key accused.
According to the police, the class 3 student left her house around 2 pm on Tuesday but did not return. When her family and the locals searched for her, they found her blood-soaked body near a bush at around 8 pm. The family alleged she was raped and killed.
On Wednesday morning, irate locals gheraoed the police station and demolished the home of the accused.
Police have sent the body for a post-mortem, while forces have been deployed in the town.
Bhadrak Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Rout said the accused was arrested from Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday, and some others have been detained.
“A forensic team had visited the spot to assist the police in the investigation. The police are taking all necessary steps. The situation is under control now,” said the Bhadrak SP.
As locals alleged that unauthorised liquor shops in the area led to such crimes, the SP said, “We are taking steps to remove all illegal shops and will take strong action against those involved in unlawful activities. A special drive will be launched to curb illegal liquor and ganja (weed) sale in the district.”
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed the police to ensure stringent punishment for the culprits. He also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family.
