Anticipating an influx of large numbers of people during the Muharram procession from Wednesday evening, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tuesday appealed to motorists to avoid commuting on roads in Mahim and Sion in a bid to prevent congestion in the area.
Each year, during Muharram, a procession is taken out from Bandra, Kurla, Dharavi and other adjoining areas upto Mahim Bandar wherein Tazia, a replica of the mausoleum of Imam Hussain, is immersed, according to civic officials.
With several processions slated on July 17, the civic body has issued guidelines, appealing residents to avoid commuting from T Junction in G/North ward to Kala Nagar, 60 feet road, 90 feet road as well SL Rahega marg and Mahim causeway.
In its appeal, the BMC has urged motorists to avoid these routes between 4 pm on July 17 and 4 am on July 18, seeking to avoid congestion.
Furthermore, the Central Railway authority has declared the Sion flyover, a crucial east-west connector, as dangerous. Therefore, vehicles over the height of 2.80 metres have been prohibited from traversing on the flyover, added BMC.
