Global fusion
The Consular Corp,Rotary Club and the Oberoi hotel hosted the 2009 Melting Pot on Sunday at the Regal Room at the Trident. The annual event saw 23 countries set up stalls and serve delicacies from their countriesa gastronomic treat with a conscience,as all proceeds went to charity. Sabira Merchant was the compere for the evening, which included traditional dances from Indonesia and Malaysia as well as an auction for various prizes, including Mexican tequila glass stands. The US consul general Paul Folmsbee,Madam Marijke van Drunen Littel of Holland and Giampaulo and Elisabetta Cutillo of Italy made their presence felt; the South African and Indonesian representatives added a bit of flair by breaking into impromptu dances. It was heartening to see the consul generals in their traditional attire, interacting with each other as well as with guests.
Showstopper:The highlight,of course, was the food. The Belgian chocolates disappeared quickly and the excellent Sangria served by the Spanish was a close second. The deputy consul general of China sketched traditional calligraphy on the spot, which was auctioned-a fascinating enough distraction from the food.
