A Centre of Excellence for Minimal Access Surgery,an autonomous body aimed at training budding surgeons, was inaugurated at Worli here last week. Eminent surgeons from across the country are among the faculty at the centre.

“The training centre will focus primarily on laparoscopic surgery, which is minimal invasive surgery. It will be an opportunity for surgeons from all specialties. There will be special emphasis on mastering the basics of surgical skills,” its head Dr Tehemton Udwadia said.

Those registering for training at the centre,a first of its kind in city, will be attending the course along with their conventional training. The duration of the course will vary according to the specialty.

It has tied up with the BMC-run KEM Hospital and the private Hinduja Hospital to train resident doctors, post graduate and under graduate doctors who enroll for the course.

“We want to especially reach out to surgeons practicing in rural areas. Proper training with advanced techniques will help in ensuring that people in remote areas also have access to laparoscopic treatment. As of now,we have collaborated with two major city hospitals but in due course we want to reach out to all practicing and aspiring surgeons in the city,” he added
