The first phase of data collection for Census 2011 kickstarted here on Saturday with the first citizen,Governor K Sankaranarayanan,being the first in the state to sign the census form. He was also given a receipt for the same.
The Governor urged the citizens to come forward and make the programme a success. We should ensure that the reach of the Census is 100 per cent in Mumbai. He also advised the Census officials to explain the importance of the procedure to people so that they would voluntarily provide information.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan too signed the census form and urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to leave a notice at those households unavailable for the process. He also urged citizens to participate as it would help citizens in getting their Unique Identification (UID) cards .
The other dignitaries who participated in the Census on Saturday included Mayor Shraddha Jadhav,Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal,Chief Secretary JP Dange and Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.
BMC Commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya and additional commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar had accompanied a team of six-seven officials to the dignitaries houses for the Census duty.
BMC executive health officer Dr GT Ambe said enumerators would visit assigned blocks over the next few days. Once numbering is done,they would start collecting information from citizens.
