State moots EGS in cities
Mumbai: The state government is planning to extend the employment guarantee scheme (EGS) to cities as well in order to provide social security for the urban poor. At present,the project is confined to only rural areas. Minister for EGS Nitin Raut said on Friday that there were poor unemployed people in cities,who could get the benefit if the scheme were extended to cities. He said under the scheme,urban poor like coolies,hawkers and domestic servants could get the benefit of the scheme. The modalities of the scheme are being worked out.
Tiger skin worth Rs 4 lakh seized
Nagpur: The Chandrapur police on Thursday seized a tiger skin from the possession of six persons in the Manikgarh area of Chandrapur district. All six were arrested and remanded to police custody till January 12.
We conducted the operation along with the Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI),that provided the intelligence inputs, Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Sharma said.
Its a very big tiger skin,valued at about Rs 4 lakh in the international market. It couldnt be immediately ascertained where the tiger was killed,but we are sure it was killed with electric shock, he added.
Probe into assault on MNS MLA
Mumbai: Home Minister RR Patil has ordered an Inspector General-level inquiry into the alleged assault on Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLA Harshvardhan Jadhav by police in Aurangabad on Wednesday.
Jadhav was allegedly manhandled by the police when he tried to enter Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavans convoy,following which he has been admitted to a hospital. MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar and several party leaders had rushed to Aurangabad after the incident and demanded action against the policemen.
