Six months after the maintenance of the Eastern Freeway was handed over to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, several anti-crash barriers along the high-speed corridor have been found missing along the stretch from Bhakti Park in Wadala towards the P D’mello Road junction. Civic officials fear that this could lead to increased severity of injuries in case of accidents along the Freeway, alongside the additional cost of replacing the barriers repeatedly.

According to the senior civic officials, several anti-crash barriers (made of metal) have gone missing over the last few months. “It is also noticed that the middle vertical supports of the barriers are also missing in some places. It appears that these metal barriers are being stolen by ragpickers during the night. They may then be sold to scrap dealers. It is very dangerous, the issue needs to be fixed urgently,” said a senior official requesting anonymity.

Officials from the Bridges department of the BMC admitted that metal barriers appear to have been stolen. “The freeway has just been handed over to us. We have written a complaint to the police asking them to take necessary action in the matter,” said SO Kori, chief engineer (Bridges).

Another official from the bridges department said that the police seems have taken no action on it. “ We have written to three police stations about it but haven’t heard anything from they yet,” the official said. “Also, we contacted the MMRDA to over the issue. They told us that the anti crash dividers are not covered under the defect liability period of the contractor who was appointed by them to construct the road. Since the anti crash dividers are of metal, it is going to cost us heavily. So, we are yet to decide what should be done,” the official explained.

Last year, the lights in the tunnel near Panjrapol on Eastern Freeway remained switched off for a few days. While the civic authorities took some time to fix it, the officials said that had been due to a technical issue.
