Sources said the PWD has proposed to pay Rs 70 crore as mobilisation advance to the contractor following the Cabinet decision. The PWD’s proposal was sent to the GAD by the finance department, said an official.

Vaijanath Mukane (32), a native of drought-hit Jalna in Marathwada, was arrested by the Azad Maidan police late Monday night for allegedly attacking advocate Gunaratan Sadavarte outside the Bombay High Court.

The missive comes three weeks after a person drowned and 24 others had a close shave after a speedboat carrying visitors to the site of the proposed Shivaji memorial in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai’s Marine Drive, hit a rocky surface underwater and began to flood.
According to the government records, the then Chief Minister, Manohar Joshi, had made an announcement of constructing a grand memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Mumbai during a programme on June 14, 1996.
The probe has further revealed that the boat, which had a capacity to ferry 13 to 15 people, including the crew, was carrying at least 10 extra passengers. Also, it was not carrying adequate number of lifejackets.
Soli Engineer, a marine expert and former executive director of Great Offshore Limited, also said there are rocks in the vicinity of the site, and the boat operators often don’t know about these rocks that are under water during high tide.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said the Opposition parties had alleged several times that there are irregularities in the plans for the construction of the statue. But the government ignored those.
Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, Dhananjay Munde, said the officials involved should be removed from their posts. “If the contractor L&T is found involved in the irregularities and corruption, then it should be blacklisted,” he added.
“As there were a lot of people, the fourth private speedboat was used. We are now enquiring to find out who requisitioned it and how it was allowed to take passengers to the spot,” said a state government official.
