A 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Dharavi Thursday morning.

A 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Dharavi Thursday morning. She was rushed to Sion Hospital but succumbed.

Police said Shaista of Bihar married Mohammad Musafir (24) a year-and-a-half ago and started living with him at Manjuwadi in Dharavi. Thursday morning,Mohammad,a salesman who lost his job with a telecom company 10 days ago,was away. His nephew Abu Rehman was home with Shaista.

Police said at 11.30 am,Shaista gave Abu Rehman to eat and went to her bedroom,poured kerosene on herself and lit a match. Hearing her cries,Abu Rehman went to fetch his mother who lives nearby. A crowd gathered and extinguished the flames.

Police were called and Shaista was rushed to hospital.

She had suffered 75% burns and was declared dead on arrival. She did not leave behind any suicide note and her husband and in-laws are clueless. Abu Rehman told us Shaista sat him in the living room and served him bread-toast and tea. She set herself on fire while he was eating. We will speak to him Friday. Her parents have been notified,but they are yet to leave for Mumbai, said sub-inspector Prakash Mane of Shahu Nagar police station.
