The van left with Rs 1.38 crore in cash from a branch in Navi Mumbai on Friday morning.
The police have launched a manhunt for a driver of an armoured van who allegedly drove away with a van carrying Rs 1.28 crore in cash to be filled in Automated Teller Machines (ATM) in Mumbai, on Friday afternoon. The van was found abandoned an hour later, with both the driver and the cash missing.
According to police sources, the van left with Rs 1.38 crore in cash from a branch in Navi Mumbai on Friday morning. The cash
was to be dispensed at several ATM centres in Mumbai, and apart from the driver, identified as Amar Singh, it was occupied by a guard and a loader.

“After completing a couple of drops, the van reached a Central Bank of India ATM centre in Trombay around 2:30 pm on Friday. The guard and the loader unloaded Rs 2.5 lakh in cash from the van and took it inside the centre to load it into the machine. While they were both inside the ATM centre, the driver started up the van and drove away,” said Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni.
The guard and the loader immediately informed their employer about the incident, who, in turn, called the Mumbai Police Control Room. Simultaneously, the employer started tracking the location of the van based on the GPS device installed in it and around an hour later, the van was found abandoned near the Don Bosco school in Matunga, with Singh and the cash missing.
“A case is being registered at the Matunga police station, which will later be transferred to the Trombay police station. We suspect that driver had help waiting for him in Martunga as it would have been difficult for him to unload the heavy box of cash and take it away all by himself,” Kulkarni added.
