Youth held for stealing Rs 50,000 to watch match
Popat Dattu Pawde,a 22-year-old Thane resident,wanted to watch a World Cup match at the Wankhede stadium so badly that he allegedly stole Rs 50,000 from his employers safe for the tickets. Pawde was working at the Biroda Transport Company in Pydhonie,from where Rs 50,000 was reported missing last week. Senior police inspector Shamsherkan Pathan said four employees worked at the company and one of them had locked the shop on Wednesday night. In the course of investigations,a pan vendor said he had seen Pawde return half an hour after he had left.
On interrogation,Pawde confessed. He saw his employer Lahu Koliba Kharat keep the amount in the safe. Pawde knew Bhimrao had the keys to the lock and removed one of the keys and hid it . He returned from Masjid Bunder station half an hour after the shop was shut and took the money from the safe, said Pathan.
Cop,friend killed in e-way mishap
Anant Gawde,a Police Inspector from Mumbai Police Crime Branch,and his friend Bajirao Dinkar Chavan were killed when the Alto car they were travelling in skid and crashed into a divider on Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Monday. The two were rushed to hospital,but were declared dead on arrival, said S Sawant of the Highway Police Control Room. It is not clear how the vehicle skid,but it definitely did not hit another vehicle, added the officer. Gawde was part of the team of officers investigating the drugs haul case involving DySP Ashok Dhawle.
Two held with 62 kg of hashish
The Narcotics Control Bureau has seized a truck containing 62 kg of hashish valued at over Rs 1 crore and arrested two men from Jammu and Kashmir who were acting as couriers. Mangal Bhagat (40) and Vijay Kumar (45),of Satwari in J&K,were intercepted as they stopped their truck at a roadside eatery in Thane. A search brought to light 23 scotched taped packets concealed in cavities specially made in the rear side of the drivers cabin of the truck,said the NCB press note.The two have been remanded in custody till March 10.
