With Delhi set to host the AI Impact Summit, Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, in a recent meeting, has directed agencies to revamp areas around Bharat Mandapam, IGI Airport and major tourist hubs across the city, officials said on Thursday.
Verma, at the high-level meeting with all agencies concerned, asked them to make sure that arrangements are “better than those made during the G-20 Summit” and that all assigned works are completed by the end of January.
The AI Impact Summit is scheduled for February 15 to 20. The main inaugural event will be held on February 19 at Bharat Mandapam.
The MCD and the NDMC have been asked to take measures to control the presence of stray animals, officials said. He has also issued a slew of directions to all government agencies, including the Delhi Police and civic bodies, to ensure they are fully prepared to welcome various foreign delegates and their families.
Activities to be organised prior to the main event and related bilateral engagements will be held at Bharat Mandapam and Hyderabad House. Additionally, a public event is proposed to be organised from February 15 at Central Park.
“Chief Secretary emphasised that Heads of State of various foreign countries, leadership of prominent international organisations, and AI leaders, including CEOs of top AI companies, are expected to participate in the summit, and in view of this, all arrangements including security, traffic, movement of dignitaries, cleanliness and beautification of the city, road conditions, signage, lighting, and preparations at important tourist areas and markets likely to be visited, etc., must be on the lines of the G-20 Summit,” read the minutes of the meeting.
During the meeting, Verma expressed concerns regarding the condition of the city’s roads. Agencies responsible for maintaining roads, including PWD, NDMC, MCD, and DDA, have been asked to make a detailed plan and identify roads that need repair and beautification.
The NDMC has identified about 41 roads for improvement, officials said. PWD has been directed to ensure the upkeep of all roads under its jurisdiction, especially those connecting IGI Airport, Bharat Mandapam, Hyderabad House, tourist places, and other prominent marketplaces. In all, over 50 roads will be revamped or beautified.
The civic agencies have also been directed to ensure that there are no potholes or damaged central verges, fix missing signage, remove dark spots, improve footpaths, and ensure that all fountains are clean, functional, and aesthetically lit.
“All agencies must ensure 100 per cent functional pole lights on roads, roundabouts, and market areas. Aesthetic decorative illumination may be done…,” read the minutes of the meeting.
The agencies have also been asked to beautify the roads and areas around the Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Akshardham, Chandni Chowk, Raj Ghat, among others.
Besides, the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation has been
directed to make arrangements for sightseeing tours, as was done during the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Summit organised at the Red Fort.
Moreover, each of the agencies has been asked to set up a control room for monitoring event-related activities, constitute emergency response teams.
