THE Mumbai police Friday night arrested Usman Ghanchi, the alleged handler of the dhow MSV Yusufi, which was intercepted by Coast Guard off the Mumbai coast on April 3. The boat had roused suspicion as it was found to be using a Thuraya Satellite phone which is prohibited in the country. A swoop by the coast guards on the boat later led to the seizure of an eclectic cargo ranging from cigarette cartons to exotic goats all of which were to be delivered to Ghanchi.
The 33-year-old Ghanchi was on the run since April 4. He was holed up in a lodge in Kashimira on the Mira-Bhayander Road and was picked after informers tipped off the Yellowgate Police.
The police said that the dhow, carrying goods such as cartons of imported cigarettes, mobile accessories, television sets along with 28 goats, was supposed to be delivered to Ghanchi in Mumbai. The vessel, which is registered in Kutch, was sailing from Dubai to Sri Lanka. During the initial investigation the crew told the police that they decided to head for Mumbai after the engine developed a snag.
“Ghanchi was arrested under the charges of telegraph act, tobacco act and animal cruelty act and was produced before a local court on Saturday, which remanded him in police custody till 25 April,” said Krishna Prakash,ACP (south region). The police are now trying to find out whether Ghanchi has been involved in such operations earlier as well.
