I have received many queries about the name of the tall, about 50-feet high tree with a peculiar ‘coconut like’ fruit hanging on it near the bank square. Well readers, your description is very near to its name, this is Buddha’s Coconut tree. It is a tall, columnar tree which is leafless nowadays. It is suitable as an avenue tree where space and road width is less. Another interesting fact about this tree is that no two adjacent leaves of this tree resemble each other. It is because of this trait,in Bengal, they call it ‘Pagla Gachh’,the mad tree.

* I have a beautiful Amaltas tree in front of my house. I have noticed that the newly immersed leaves are being eaten by some insect, though it’s not visible. How can we control it?
Ragini,Chandigarh
The new leaves indeed get eaten by beetle larvae which can be controlled by spraying sevin, dissolved at two gram to a litre of water. Spray the tree thoroughly and repeat after a fortnight.

* Please tell about the preference and duration between two irrigations with respect to mango, litchi and grapes.
Gurjit,Mohali
The list with respect to the preference should be litchi, grapes and mango. Litchi and grapes should be watered at least, twice in a week and mango once.

* Does the variety have any bearing on the splitting of fruit in litchi during this month? What are the other causes?
Monica,Panchkula
The variety ‘Calcuttia’ is less prone to splitting than ‘Dehradun’. Other reasons could be pruning of base branches that allow hot air to enter the tree crown and water shortage. Also,a tree planted in a open space is more prone to splitting than that surrounded by other trees or vegetation.

* Why do some trees shed leaves in summer? Is it because of water shortage? Can you name some trees that shed leaves in summer?
Pardeep Kumar,Chandigarh
Trees shed leaves in adverse weather conditions to escape injury. It may be in severe winter or summer. When the conditions are favourable, the leaves reappear. Some of the trees that shed leaves in summer are Chalta,Buddha’s Coconut tree and Ber.
