Punjab custodian Raghu was a towering figure under the bar as he put a spirited performance to help Punjab beat Gujarat in the opening match of the 13th Inter-Zonal National Handball Championship being held at the PAU grounds on Wednesday.

Punjab custodian Raghu was a towering figure under the bar as he put a spirited performance to help Punjab beat Gujarat in the opening match of the 13th Inter-Zonal National Handball Championship being held at the PAU grounds on Wednesday.

Dominated by international star players,both the teams came up with stellar performances in the game. Raghu who was also acting as the skipper of the Punjab team made his intention clear from the very beginning as his players played an attacking game. Mohinder Rawat,member of Indian team in Doha Asian Games,did not let go of any chance that came his way and scored as many as 11 goals in the game. Meanwhile,for Gujarat,it was international player Praveen Kumar who took in-charge of the attack and pumped in 10 goals. However,Gujarat goalkeeper failed to match Raghu and the team suffered defeat.

For the winners,Charanjeet,Hardev and Kulwinder scored four goals each while Sukhdev scored three goals for the team. For Gujrat,it was Praveen Kumar who scored 10 goals while Prem Kumar scored four goals. Imran and Anil scored three goals each. As many as six men and five women teams are participating in the championship which is being played according to ’round robin league’ basis.
