Varun Gandhi’s uncle and the Congress candidate for Pilibhit is the richest man to enter the Lok Sabha elections. He declared assets worth over Rs 632 crore in the affidavit submitted with his nomination papers on Thursday.

Singh,49,is a cousin of BJP leader Maneka Gandhi and it was he who highlighted his nephew’s provocative speeches that ultimately led to Varun’s detention under the NSA,and also earned him a rap on the knuckles from the Election Commission.

Now,Singh has upstaged the BSP’s Deepak Bhardwaj, who became known as the richest candidate when he declared assets worth around Rs 600 crore when filing his nomination from West Delhi constituency last week.

VM Singh was elected to the UP assembly in 1993 on the Janata Dal ticket and defeated by the BSP candidate in the 2007 assembly elections in Puranpur Assembly constituency in Pilibhit district.

Maneka had introduced Singh to politics. Asked why he fell out with her,Singh replied,“It’s an old issue. But I can say that I fight for farmers and she fights for animals.”

As for fighting against his nephew,he replied,“If Varun is my bhanja, then I am his maama. Varun should pay me due regard and not contest the election.” Asked why he got into politics,he replied,“ I am the only man fighting for the farmers. It is because of me that sugarcane growers across the country are getting Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 crore extra every year following a Supreme Court decision on the PIL I had filed on sugarcane support price,” said Singh.
