UP win national sub-junior handball opener

Uttar Pradesh started its campaign in the 27th National Sub-Junior Boys’ Handball Championship on a winning note by registering a thrilling 26-24 victory against Jharkhand in the opening encounter. The hosts were leading by 11-10 at half-time in this pool ‘D’ match.

When UP boys displaying good aggression in their game took a 4-0 lead,many in the spectators gallery thought that the match will be a one-sided battle. But the Jharkhand boys bounced back and gave a tough fight to UP. On behalf of Uttar Pradesh,Himanshu (8 goals),Amarjeet (5 goals),Ramesh (4 goals),Nandkishore (3 goals) and Santosh (3 goals) were the main goal-getters. On behalf of Jharkhand,M Shadab Husain (10 goals),Kumar Gaurav (8 goals) and Rahul Gupta (3 goals) played well.

In the matches organised in the evening session,Chhattisgarh beat Orissa 30-22 in a pool ‘A’ match,Delhi beat West Bengal by 23-8 in pool ‘B’ while Tamil Nadu beat Karnataka by 13-11 in a pool C match.

Earlier in the day,the tournament was inaugurated by Secretary Sports (UP) Lalit Varma.
