UP ‘Red’ storm into semis

UP ‘Red’ team quelled aside the challenge of Bhiwani,Haryana 14-1 in their last eight stage match to storm into the semi-finals of the Balrampur Chini All India KD Singh ‘Babu’ Memorial Sub-Junior Boys’ Invitation Hockey Tournament being held at Dhyanchand astro-turf stadium,here.

UP ‘Red’ team quelled aside the challenge of Bhiwani,Haryana 14-1 in their last eight stage match to storm into the semi-finals of the Balrampur Chini All India KD Singh ‘Babu’ Memorial Sub-Junior Boys’ Invitation Hockey Tournament being held at Dhyanchand astro-turf stadium,here.

In the other three quarter-finals played on Friday,Cheema Academy,Punjab beat Andhra Pradesh 4-0,Ludhiana drubbed Shahbad,Haryana 8-0 while Orissa defeated Uttar Pradesh ‘Blue’ 2-1 in a keenly contested match.

In the match between Uttar Pradesh ‘Red’ and Bhiwani,UP ‘Red’ team exercised an upper hand from the very onset of the match. The score at half-time was 9-0 in favour of UP ‘Red’. Manish Rajbhar blasted four goals,Ajay Yadav and Akash Yadav netted three goals each,Sumit Kumar sounded the boards twice while Praveen Kumar and Vishal Thakur struck apiece each as UP ‘Red’ registered a comprehensive 14-1 win against Bhiwani. The consolation goal for Bhiwani was netted by Rajesh Tanwar in the second-half of the match.

In all— Uttar Pradesh ‘Red’ got six penalty corners— in the 2nd,3rd,24th,32nd,39th and 44th minute of the play out of which it was able to make use of two such opportunities while Bhiwani did not get any PC.

Cheema Academy,Punjab defeated Andhra Pradesh 4-0 in their quarter-final match. While Love Preet Singh found the target twice— in the 23rd (through PC) and 27th minute,Pradeep Singh (24th minute) and Raman Bir Singh (29th minute) struck apiece each. Cheema Academy got four penalty corners out of which it made use of one such opportunity,Andhra Pradesh did not get any PCs.

In the quarter-final between Ludiana and Shahbad,Haryana,the former emerged victors by a comprehensive 8-0 margin. For Ludhiana,Sahil Gill,Sukhjeet Singh and Tanveer Singh netted two goals each while Sabar Ali and skipper Harman Preet Singh netted one goal each. While Ludhiana got six penalty corners out of which it struck goals on two such chances,Shahbad got two penalty corners.

The last quarter-final match played between Orissa and Uttar Pradesh ‘Blue’ proved to be a real thriller in which both the teams resorted to an attacking game from the very onset of the match. M Faiz Sarwar of UP ‘Blue’ succeeded in breaking the ice in the very sixth minute of the play. However,Orissa skipper Arun Dung Dung made no mistake in capitalising on a penalty-corner awarded to his team in the 22nd minute to level the scores.

Dribbling past defenders with good vision,Sudhir Kumar scored a goal in the 48th minute to make the score 2-1 which was maintained till the final moments of the play. While Orissa got five penalty corners out of which it made use of one such chance,UP ‘Blue’ was given four PCs and one penalty-stroke but it could not avail any such chance.

Saturday will be a rest day. On February 1,the semi-finals will beheld.
