Hours after the National Human Rights Commission sought a report on the death of a 14-year old girl, who was found hanging in mysterious circumstances at Nighasan police station campus in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Friday, the state government swung into action and ordered a CB-CID probe into the incident.
The government has also ordered a fresh postmortem, which will be conducted by a team of doctors from other districts.
A lady doctor will be part of the new team.
Meanwhile,an FIR has also been lodged against a sub-inspector and two constables on the charges of destroying the evidence under section 201 of the IPC.
Earlier in the day,the postmortem report stated that the girl died of asphyxia from hanging.
Armed with the report, the police denied the allegation that the girl was murdered.
The girl’s father Intezam Ali had accused station officer Ravi Srivastava and a constable of raping and killing his daughter after which 10 policemen, including the SO,were suspended on Saturday.
The police are awaiting the report of her vaginal smear.
“The postmortem report said the girl had died due to hanging. It establishes that the girl was not murdered. We have now to investigate the case, focusing on the possibilities of suicide or accidental hanging,” said D K Rai,SP,Kheri. “Nothing can be said about the allegation of rape until the report of the vaginal smear is received,” SP said.
The victim,Sonam, lived with her parents about a hundred yards from the police station. Around 11 am,she had gone out looking for their buffalo and in the afternoon, her mother Tarannum spotted her hanging by her own ‘dupatta’ from a tree inside the Nighasan police station campus.
Tarannum alleged that the height of the branch from the ground was almost equal to her daughter’s height and it was not possible for the girl to hang herself. She alleged her daughter was first raped and murdered.
“Locals said the girl used to go to that place with her younger brother and other children. We are investigating if any other children or her brother had gone with her on Friday,” said an official.
