In a bad Bollywood year when biggies like Subhash Ghais Yuvvraaj and Yashraj Films Tashan didnt quite have the cash registers ringing,a few debutante directors, like Abbas Tyrewala (Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na),Raj Kumar Gupta (Aamir) and Kunal Deshmukh (Jannat),became newsmakers, what with their innovative scripts, brilliant performances and stylish actors. Back with their second stint,it is not going to be a cakewalk. Will the mounting pressure and undue expectations allow them to recreate the magic?
The first time around you are grappling with the feeling of filmmaking, but the second time you are fighting the external pressures of producing a good movie. You are constantly thinking of bettering your previous attempt, says Deshmukh, whose second film Tum Mile, that releases in November, highlights the Mumbai floods. While Jannat was topical and dealt with the murky world of match-fixing,Tum Mile is more challenging as a filmmaker. We had to shoot in knee-deep water for almost two to three hours everyday.
While most of the directors get their second break early,Soham Shah waited six years after Kaal for his latest venture Luck (releasing next month). In Kaal,I put in a lot of creativity, sometimes going overboard. But Luck is a film to purely entertain the masses. From my first outing I have realised that ntertainment value is more important than personal satisfaction, he confesses. Rumi Jaffrey, whose debut God Tussi Great Ho saw two of the biggest Bollywood stars,Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan, come together on screen, feels every movie is a struggle. Being a scriptwriter for years,I had experience. But the excitement of direction is huge, says Jaffrey who is now making Life Partner with Govinda and Genelia Dsouza. One things for sure; my first film has made me critical of my second.
Gupta, who struggled for two years to find a producer till UTV Spotboy signed him on for Aamir,is making yet another movie for the production house. If Aamir is a thrillertaut and realexpect more from No One Killed Jessica, promises Gupta about his film thats based on the Jessica Lal murder case. His first directorial experience has made him more detail-conscious. Every time I watch Aamir,I feel I could have shot a particular scene in a different manner. With No One..,I will make sure I do it, says Gupta.
Success certainly has its way and a prime instance would be of Tyrewala casting his wife Pakhi in a lead role opposite John Abraham in his second venture 1-800-LOVE. You definitely become more confident with the second film and you are willing to take more risks, says Jaffrey.
With the film industry opening up to new people,it has given young filmmakers hope to jump the barrel again. It also helps immensely if the first film does well at the box-office, says Deshmukh who has zeroed in on Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan as the main protagonists. I scripted Tum Mile even before Jannat, but then all the top actors refused to be a part of this film. But I guess, having success under your belt has its advantages, he says. Gupta agrees,It is definitely easier to have the big names working for you,but there is a risk of getting carried away. When you have big names, you can give in to temptation and want to write a script that suits his/her personality. One must steer clear of this.
